Best of March

This is over a week late, but I've been pretty busy with work and school. That being said, there's been some really good bands that've released some really good songs in March. Here's the best of them:

I Will Follow You Into the Dark (Death Cab for Cutie) - A Fine Frenzy
- I saw this one performed life at the Iron Horse recently - one of the best covers that I've seen of this song.

Snakes and Ladders - Basia Bulat
In The Night - Basia Bulat
- I came across Bulat via NPR's all songs considered, and really like her energy and sound - it's got a lot of spirit.

Going On - Gnarls Barkley
- The other track after Run that I really got into from Gnarl Barkley's latest release, the Odd Couple.

Buffalo - Kathleen Edwards
Goodnight California - Kathleen Edwards
- Edwards was just in Vermont, and I wasn't able to make it out to see her, something that I was a bit bummed out about. These two tracks are the best off of her latest release, Asking for Flowers.

Punch Bowl - Punch Brothers
- One of the guys from Nickel Creek and some friends with their latest project. Their first album is fantastic, and this is a fun song.

Living Well is the Best Revenge - R.E.M.
- R.E.M.'s latest song is really catchy - I haven't really listened to REM extensively, but I think that I'm going to - their latest album sounds really good.

New Soul - Tristan Prettyman
- Lastly, that song that has been on the iPod commercial has already been covered - by Tristan Prettyman, who does a fantastic rendition of the song.

Run!

Gnarls Barkley has a new, catchy song to listen to, called run, which will be on the upcoming album The Odd Couple, due out in April. Here's an audio stream to listen to:

Real Media
Windows Media
iTunes

I like this song, I really do. It has a really interesting, old school feel to is, which is cool, and it's not a copy of Crazy, which everybody and their brother was crazy about...

C&O

One thing that I like to sort of collect is covers of songs. It's always cool to see two different takes on any given song, especially if the singers are from different backgrounds. Take the various covers of Crazy, by Gnarls Barkley.

The original Crazy is a fast, hip-hop type of song with a heavy bass line, but it's got a very easy going quality towards it. I'm not a hip-hop fan at all, but this one's not only tolerable, but highly listenable. It's a well put together song, with good vocal work and backgrounds, and it's not overly complicated by wanting to be a dance number or with too much going on.

Ray LaMontagne has also done a variation on the song, to his own style. He follows the more acoustic guitar tradition (Which I'm a sucker for) and he brings that, but his own lower vocal work to it. In addition, he changes up his time and pacing for the song, not trying to really follow the original too much, which is a plus for this song. There's only so many times that you can listen to a song cover, but what's the point if it's exactly like the original?
