Best Songs of 2009

While there have been a number of albums that have been absolutely incredible, music is remembered by the songs that top everything else that you go back to time and time again. This year has been no exception.

Runner Up, 11 -
Empire State Of Mind (Part II) Broken Down - Alicia Keys
This was a song that I hadn't heard up until a couple days ago. Keys is not an artist who usually pops up on my radar, but I suspect that I'll start paying more attention to her as I drift somewhat more into the Soul/R&B scene. What caught my ears with this track is Keys incredible vocals, which just flow over the song as it builds with energy. I know that had I heard this earlier, it would have been on my Best, New playlist for a while.

10 -
Taller Children - Elizabeth & The Catapult
Taller Children was my first introduction to Elizabeth & The Catapult, off of their first album by the same name. What caught me at first was its quirky beat and fun lyrics, and it kept me listening through the entire album. Easily the best song off the album, it's still refreshing, even after all of these listens. In particular, I love the groove and energy that is spread out through the entire album.

9 -
Quiet Highway Road - The Alternate Routes
Quiet Highway Road is just as it sounds. While I've extolled the virtues of The Alternate Routes numerous times for their energy at their live shows and with several songs off of this album, this song stuck with me every time that I listened through the album. Stuck at the end of A Sucker's Dream, it's the perfect epilogue for a fantastic album. Coupled with the amount of driving that I do, the song has become somewhat of an anthem for me while speeding along the back highways of Vermont. Listening over the album, I get such a fantastic feeling of freedom and liberation that I get from getting on the road, and I'm reminded that once the days get a bit longer, I'll take a couple of weekends and get back on them, with this song blaring on the radio.

8 -
Travelling Woman - Bat for Lashes
I'm not overly aware of Bat for Lashes, but this song caught me while listening to Joss Whedon's TV show
Dollhouse. This song was perfectly placed at the end of one of the best episodes (Belonging), in a sort of montage scene. The scene struck me as being particularly important and part of that was the song. Natasha Khan's voice is haunting over the lyrics, and end result is a beautiful, resounding song that remains with me.

7 -
The Hazards of Love 1 (The Prettiest Whistles Won't Wrestle the Thistles Undone) - The Decemberists
While there's a prologue to the album, this album kicks off the album in grand style. The first of four '
Hazards of Love' songs, this one introduces the main, epic story, setting events into motion that carries over. While the album as a whole really can't be picked apart and listened to in its component parts (apart from The Rake's Song), this song does a decent job of it, and in a way, can be listened to as its own story. The best thing about this song is that unlike the rest in the album, it won't leave you hanging for more when it's finished, if that's all that you really want to listen to. Furthermore, Colin Meloy is at his best sound for this entire album, and the song as a whole is a strong one, bringing out the album's unique theme right off the bat in grand style.

6 -
Getaway Girl - Sarah Siskind
Sarah Siskind was an artist that I came across last year, but it was 2009 when she introduced her new album,
Say It Louder. Getaway Girl was one of the songs that stuck out for me as the best song of the album. It feels strong, resilient, and Siskind's fantastic voice hovers along with the guitar work here in a really good way. The song just feels right through and through, and as with others on this list; it's been a song that I've gone back to numerous times without tiring of it. Getaway Girl just flows in a very chilled, laidback fashion that seems perfect for winter here in Vermont.

5 -
Nothing But A Miracle - Diane Birch
Nothing But A Miracle is my favorite track off of Diane Birch's fantastic album Bible Belt, one that features a wonderful R&B/Soul feel throughout. The album is an examination of the 5 stages of grief, and the song is a fantastic look at a breakup and the recovery afterwards. This, to me, is something that anybody can really relate to. Birch sounds absolutely incredible in this song, and the rest of the album really has to struggle to keep up with the vocals and emotion wrapped up in this song.

4 -
So It Goes - Myra Flynn
Yesterday, Myra Flynn got my pick for the best album of the year, and it was an incredible struggle to pick just one of her songs for this list. I ended up with
So It Goes, although there are a couple of other songs off of the album that would have fit this nicely. The tipping point was recalling this song at her release show in Burlington over the summer. Like Ordinary Man, this song is an incredible effort when it comes to songwriting, merging mixed songs, fantastic lyrics and musical skill to present an incredible sound. I think this song is at the crux of the album, and one that certainly holds quite a bit of meaning to me.

3 -
Ordinary Man - Gregory Douglass & Grace Potter
I got an early copy of Gregory Douglass's fantastic album
Battler last year, and thought it was fantastic, but when I listened to it, I was floored by Ordinary Man, a duet between Douglass and Grace Potter, of the Nocturnals. For me, the song is very relatable, and it's one that I've attached quite a bit of sentimental value to right off the bat. Looking back over last year's Best Albums of 2008, I see that this should have been on there, or at least, it should have made it onto this year's - it certainly falls on that list. This song is romantic, emotional, and smooth and features an utterly perfect balance between Gregory and Grace's lyrics.

2 -
Born Again - Cory Chisel & the Wandering Sons
Born Again was the first song off of
Death Won't Send A Letter, and is a rich blend of Baptist gospel and folk/country rock with a rich sound and wonderful lyrics. The song feels powerful, with a heavy beat coupled with guitar and bass work that just drives the song along. Chisel's voice provides the next component to the song, and the overall tone and feel is one of inspiration, happiness, and it has such a feel that the title doesn't feel ironic or out of place. I dare you to listen to the lyrics and find yourself not moving to the beat, clapping your hands together.

1 -
Lake of Silver Bells - Carbon Leaf
The best song of the year is Carbon Leaf's
Lake of Silver Bells. I really dug Nothing Rhymes With Woman, but Silver Bells just stood far apart from the rest of the album, and I think it's one of the best songs that Carbon Leaf has ever made. The opening couple of bars lull you into this easy, laidback state of mind, but around a minute into the song, it builds and just bursts into a soft energy that grows over the rest of the song. Lead singer Barry Privet's lyrics absolutely shine here, and harkens back to their absolute best songwriting efforts with their album Echo Echo. I listened to this album over and over, and this song never got old. It's warm, invigorating and spring-like. Above all, the song feels like it really represents my mood for the past couple of months, enthusiastic, dreamlike and hopeful. This song will easily remain one of my favorite songs of all time.

Album Review: Battler

Battler is the latest album from Vermont singer-songwriter Gregory Douglass, one that builds upon his earlier works and boosts his sound to new excellence. This album is a good example of the progression of one's sound, while testing the waters with new sounds and styles. But beyond the sound and style of this album, the real bright point here is the overall theme that is demonstrated over a number of tracks. While I won't go over each track individually, but I will highlight a couple that really exemplify this.

Broken Through is the opening track, one that helps to ease the listener into the next forty-three minutes with a gentle, flowing sound that is solidly within Gregory's repertoire. Broken Through is a song that has likely been in him for a while now, looking at a tough exterior of a personality, one that is both tough and out to prove something, but one that has the dual purpose of examining the softer parts of one's soul. This dual meaning most likely extends to Gregory, an openly gay singer, and this seems like it would be a song that could easily apply to anyone conflicted with themselves, and the pressures that they must face with the choices that they bring about in their own lives.

Several other songs follow with this theme - Devotion, Madeline and Lifeline, for example, all using similar language that achieves much of the same thematic imagery - acceptance, identity, etc. This is the strength of the album - the personal nature that brings forth a personal story that has much to tell us.

The best song of this album is Ordinary Man, a touching, soft and sorrowful love song that pairs Douglass with fellow Vermont singer Grace Potter, of the Nocturnals. The tone and feel of this song is an appropriate one to end this album on. After the troubles, sorrows and conflicts that this album deals with in the prior songs, we have vindication and affirmation that everything will be okay. There is no dramatic revelation anywhere here, but it comes slowly, that after the troubles, one comes out of the battle all the better for it. As some of the final lyrics state, everything will change. But this final song is also about what this entire album is about: love, in all of its forms.

Musically, this album comes three years after his prior work, Up and Away, which I greatly enjoyed. While this album sounds good, a comparison between the two will reveal that there have been major improvements throughout Gregory's sound and lyrics. Where Up and Away sounds smooth, Battler positively glides. The piano, vocals, drumwork and overall tone and structure is stronger, more refined and more confident, where Battler feels grown up, ready to tackle something far larger, while Up and Away gave it a sure footing to start with. This is an album that builds upon the prior, and fires everything it has, making it an incredibly hard album to top.

Battler is a complex and intriguing album, one that feels full of personal feeling and experience from Mr. Douglass. It, as the title suggests, is about the conflict that one finds throughout life, and how, going through the trials of life, one will be far more complete and at peace with their lives. Undoubtedly, Douglass's sexual orientation and associated experiences has provided him with plenty of insight into this, but this album, while it can be applied to any given community, transcends that. It is not for anyone, it is a general commentary that can be applied to everyone's lives, no matter who they are, no matter who they identify with, and that is why this album succeeds so fantastically. It takes a set of observations and applies them in ways that everyone can relate. For this reason, it is one to be listened to, because it can not only reveal, but it can teach, and that is possibly the most important thing of all.

Douglass played a fantastic show in Vermont last night at South Burlington's Higher Ground showroom, along with Meika Pauley, and backed by a five-member band. This show was a great welcome back to Douglass, and featured the other two Vermonters who had collaborated with him on the album, Grace Potter and Anais Mitchell, who sang their respective duets from Battler. Douglass, backed by a full band is a formidable force on stage, and his songs take on an even greater presence with a lot of power behind them. Lisa Piccirillo provided backing vocals, and she seems to be an artist to check up on.
A number of the really good songs from Battler and some of his prior albums were given this treatment, and it was a fantastic experience. Grace Potter in particular was a fantastic addition to the night. If you are able to, check out Douglass at some of his upcoming shows:

Coming Up: The Albums of 2009

As 2008 comes to a close, everyone is starting to think about the upcoming year and what will be coming out. There's never a shortage of artists who we always want to be releasing new materials, and already, I've started looking for what will be coming out in 2009. Here's what I'm really looking forwards to:

Untitled - Carbon Leaf
Carbon Leaf is my all-time favorite band. I've seen them numerous times in concert, and for the past year and a half, there's been talk of first two albums, then a new album and a remake of an old one, and now another one. Their concerts have featured several new songs, such as I'm In Love (With Another Man's Woman) and Meltdown, two fantastic songs. The album was finished earlier this fall, but we haven't seen a title or track listing yet. The band has said that the album should drop around February sometime.

Untitled - Dave Matthews Band
All this year, I've come across rumors that Dave Matthews and his band will be returning for another studio album. I always look forwards to these, because they can really shape up and change their sound from album to album. Compare Stand Up to Under the Table and Dreaming, and you'll see what I mean. Considering that their last studio album was released in 2005, we're long overdue for another one. No title, release date or track list yet. I don't know if the death of bandmate Leroy Moore will affect this or not.

Untitled - Coldplay
With the highly sucessful release of Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends and Prospekts March this year, Coldplay has been unstoppable, it seems. Their songs are ever more popular, and for good reason - this has been their strongest year yet. With all the press, they've said that they'll be releasing a followup album next year, most likely in the fall/winter. Hopefully it'll be just as good.

Untitled - Cary Brothers
I've been seeing little bits here and there, so this is mostly speculation on my part, but Cary Brothers is back in the studio, recording a followup album. I was a big fan of Who You Are, and it was one of my favorite albums of last year.

Bloodbank EP - Bon Iver
This easily has to be the most anticipated album. For Emma, Forever Ago was brilliant, heartwrenching and emotional, and easily one of the best albums of the year. (You'll see it on my best albums list coming soon). There's an EP being released in January, entitled Bloodbank, and it can't come soon enough.

A Sucker's Dream - The Alternate Routes
The Alternate Routes released their first album last year, Good and Reckless and True, which I really enjoyed, and it likewise made it onto my best albums list last December. After the release of an EP this year, they'll be back with a new album with some of their new songs. From the first single, The Future Is Nothing New, this one will be another good listen.

Hazards of Love - The Decemberists
2006's The Crane Wife is a wonderful album, and it's fully turned me to the Decemberists (whom I really didn't like at first). It was a fantastic album, and while they've been releasing new materials this year via 3 EPs, Always the Bridesmaid, a new LP from these guys will be a welcome thing for sure. Should be due out May of 2009.

Battler - Gregory Douglass
Battler is the latest album from Gregory Douglass, and one of the tracks will be featuring Grace Potter. The first track, Broken Through is fantastic, building on some of the sounds from his last album, Up and Away, which I loved. Battler is coming in February of 2009.

Stay tuned for the Best Albums, New Artists and Songs lists, coming soon!

New Gregory Douglass

One of my favorite discoveries of this past year is Gregory Douglass, a local singer-song writer out of Burlington who has a smooth and lyrical sound - evocative pop, as I've heard it described. His 2006 album Up and Away was a real pleasure to listen to and review.

The other day, I received some information about his upcoming album, to be entitled Battler, which is due out to be released in February of 2009. However, he has a pretty cool pre-order plan that ranges from $10 to $1000, which will put the album in your hands prior to that release date.

$10 - Digital copy prior to the holidays.
$25 - Bonus Disc of B-sides, advance, signed copy prior to the holidays
$50 - Personalized copy of Battler & an additional studio album & free admission to an upcoming show
$100 - Two personalized copies of any studio album, two passes to a show and a mention in the liner notes.
$500 - Four personalized copies of any studio album, four passes to upcoming show
$1000 - House concert, five personalized copies, unlimited admission to any show 2008-2009.

It's an interesting tactic, and I've already pre-ordered with option #2. In this day and age with music and the increasing influence of the internet on music sales, it's no wonder that we're seeing more things like this, from pay what you want, to free albums, donations, advance downloads and pre-orders, not to mention the weath of songs that would never otherwise get released on a regular album. Hopefully, this'll work well for Mr. Douglass.

No doubt, there will be a good review here for this album. The first track has already been posted to myspace and on his website, and I have to say, it's absolutely fantastic. Up there with his best work already, with some very thoughtful lyrics that work very well with the accompanying piano and drums. Grace Potter did some recording with Douglass earlier this year, so I'm already awaiting this release.

Cover and Original: Coldplay Covers

Continuing with Coldplay things this week, I did a little digging around and found a couple of good covers that Coldplay has done recently of other artists, and a couple of Coldplay songs that have been covered by other artists.

Coldplay's done two pretty good covers - 2000 Miles, originally by the Pretenders, and Can't Get You Out Of My Head, originally by Kylie Minogue. In both instances, they provide their own solid sound to each, which is pretty nice to hear. Helena Noguerra also does her own version of Can't Get You Out Of My Head, which is pretty neat.

As far as Coldplay covers go, I've found two. Clocks, by Jeff Bujak, which is a fair cover. I heard a couple mistakes here and there, but it's a pretty faithful version of the song. The second cover is by one of my favorite artists, Gregory Douglass, who's doing covers on Youtube, this one of Coldplay's newest hit, Viva La Vida. It's also a pretty fair cover. This is certainly something that's new with the youtube era, for artists to cover something for their fans, using Youtube as a way to distribute things.

Cover and Original: Hold On

This week's Cover and Original comes with a pair that has two really different takes on the song.
The cover, performed by Gregory Douglass last year, which made it onto his album Retro Active: Volume 1. His take on the song is very stark, with no background music at all. Douglass brings a much different tone to the song, phrasing words and sections differently, making this a much more mournful version.
Sarah McLachlan's version, off of Fumbling Towards Ecstasy is a much richer song - there's a lot of background guitar and drumwork that meshes together really well. Vocally, it's a typical McLachlan song, very lyrical and easy to listen to.

Concert Review - Mieka Pauley and Gregory Douglass

Instead of handing out on the couch watching the Grammys last night, I got a ticket to see two singer-songwriters whom I've covered here before: Gregory Douglass, with Mieka Pauley opening. I liked both artists fairly well - Gregory Douglass made my Best Discoveries of 2007 list earlier this year, and Mieka Pauley was a New Artist featured here with her latest album, Elijah Drop Your Gun.
Meika opened with a very fun set list for the night. I confess that I haven't paid as much attention to her music as I have Douglass, and I was extremely impressed by her performance. She had a great tone and energy before the audience that really got everyone moving. Vocally, she has a really good handle on her sound, as well as with the guitar - she used it in ways that I haven't really seen anyone else use it before, and got a good sound out of it with some fantastic songs. Overall, she's probably one of the better and more passionate performers opening for someone. Here's her set list:

1- Marked Man
2- Run
3- Fate Day By Day
4- All The Same Mistakes
5- When I'm In Chicago
6- Hallelujah (Cover)
7- Die
8- Get Your Shit Together (Cover)
9- Blunt
10- Heavenly
(I'm not 100% sure of all the song titles here)

Gregory Douglass was up next, and also gave a really good performance. I was really impressed with his musical style, and I've really enjoyed two of his albums that I have.
Douglass reminds me a little of David Gray and Ben Folds - he's got a similar style, and an energetic stage presence, along with some of his fantastic songs. Here's what he played:

1 - Unknown
2 - Devotion (New)
3 - Don't Tell Me It's Gonna Be Alright
4 - Turn Around
5 - Hard Enough To Try
6 - Welcome Back To The World
7 - Time
8 - Have A Nice Day
9 - Fly Away
10 - The Ride
11 - Hang Around
12 - Same alibis
13 - Enough By Now
14 - Tyrant (New)
15 - Light Don't Shine
Encore
16 - No Apology (New)
17 - Better Tomorrow

New Artist - Gregory Douglass

A couple weeks ago, I posted up my best new discoveries of 2007, a good list of new and upcoming artists that I'd come across and really enjoyed. One of the singers that I came across is a fellow Vermonter, Gregory Douglass, who hails from Burlington Vermont.
I got a tip from someone, pointing me out to this guy, and on a whim, I purchased his latest album, Up and Away, which was a 2006 release from Emote records, and was impressed from the start.
The album's really grown on me, with a fantastic, easy sound. He covers the piano, vocals and guitar, and has some really good lyrics to go along with it. I just covered another singer called Jason Spooner, and he's got a really similar sound to him. He's playing in Vermont tomorrow night at UVM and next month at the Higher Ground. I'll be heading over to the February show, if not tomorrow night's, because I'd really like to see him live in person.
In the meantime, vote for the video for Hang Around here, where he's up against several artists such as Mary J. Blige, Bloc Party, Colbie Caillat, Feist and a bunch of others.

My Mix

I can't think of a good title for this mix of songs. I was fooling around with play lists on iTunes - I swear, it's a compulsion sometimes, when I came up with the first five songs, when I realized that I had something good here. When I got home from work, I pulled another dozen songs together to come up with this final list. I think that it's the best play list that I've come up with in a while. Let me know what you think:

When The Pain Dies Down -

Pagan Angel and a Borrowed Car

The Best New Discoveries of 2007

Now that the new year is upon us, I'm going to spend the week looking back on what I liked from 2007. First up, the best new artists that I came across.

Last year was particularly rich in music for me over the entire year, but even more since I've started this site. I've come across a number of really good artists. Many thanks to everyone who's gone out and shared a little of what they've liked with everyone. I've gone out and purchased more music than I ever have before, through iTunes and hard copy and even vinyl. Here's some of my favorite new discoveries this year:

Adam Ezra Group
These guys I just discovered a couple of weeks ago, and are a smaller indie band out of Connecticut who've just started out and are playing smaller gigs around New England. If you like Dispatch or Blues Traveler, you'll likely like these guys. They've got a ton of songs up for grabs on their website, and they've got a pretty energetic live show.

Small Town City - Adam Ezra Group

The Alternate Routes
The Alternate Routes really released their first CD back in 2005, but they re-released Good and Reckless and True to fairly good radio coverage - You've probably heard Time Is A Runaway on the radio. I got to see them twice this summer, and their first album is a fantastic first effort on their part, there's a bunch of really good sounds. A good one for any Ryan Adams fans out there.

These guys were highlighted on NPR, which led me to check them out. They've got a bunch of really good songs and a new album out this year that I really enjoyed, especially Sci-Fi Kid and Wild Mountain Nation.

Ferraby Lionheart

I loved this guy - Ferraby Lionheart's got a wonderful sound along the lines of Rufus Wainwright. He's been busy this year, with his first album, called Catch the Brass Ring and a self-titled EP. Catch the Brass Ring was in my time five albums of the year, and comes highly recommended from me.

Glen Hansard and Marketa Irgova
These two guys starred in the movie Once, which I've heard a lot about. Neither are actors, but singers, and covered a Dylan song for the soundtrack I'm Not There, which I also want to see (I think I have to wait until DVD). They also contributed to Once's Sountrack.

Gregory Douglass

Douglass was recommended to me earlier this summer. He's another Vermont musician, and has been doing gigs in the area. Hopefully I'll be catching him next February when he comes to the Higher Ground. He's got a really easy sound, somewhere along Rock and Soul. He just released his latest album Up & Away, which is quite good.

Jesca Hoop

I think Jesca Hoop is one of my favorite new artists of the year. A breakout hit from Myspace and KCRW in California, she's really gotten big in the blog world with her really unique sound and songwriting. Kismet is her debut album this year.

Jess Clemons & The Cooperative

Jess Clemons is another musician who I'd gone to high school with (the other being Grace Potter from the Nocturnals). She's about to release a self titled album that sounds really good, and is someone to check out if you like Grace Potter.

Kate Nash

Kate Nash, out of England, has her first album, Made of Bricks, coming out soon. She's got a really cool sound. She's got spunk and energy, and her entire first album is a fun one to listen to.

Priscilla Ahn

I saw Ahn open for Cary Brothers earlier this year, and she did fantastically on her own. She's done a bit of work with other artists before, with Cary Brothers and Amos Lee, providing backup vocals, and now She's released her first self-titled EP earlier this year and should have her first album out shortly, which I'm looking forwards to.

Lullaby - Priscilla Ahn

Sara Bareilles

Bareilles became a big internet hit with myspace and iTunes earlier this summer with her song Love Song. She has an incredibly strong voice and is probably one of the best female singers to come out this year. Love Song's getting a lot of radio play, but there are a bunch of good songs on her album.

Skye

Skye came to my attention with a fantastic cover of Gorillaz's song Feel Good Inc. She was a singer with another band, but is now solo, having released her first album Mind How You Go recently. She's got a soft, easy sound that's good for chilling out.

The Softlightes

I found these guys with their video for their first single, Heart Made of Sound, which is probably one of my favorite songs of the year, and probably one of the best videos that I've seen. Very creative. These guys have a wonderful sound with their first album, which came out earlier this spring, Say No To Being Cool, Yes to Being Happy. If you like Death Cab for Cutie, these guys sound similar, and very upbeat.

Vampire Weekend

I suspect that these guys will make their big splash next year when their first album is released. They've already been huge this year on the internet, and it's easy to see why - these guys are fun and interesting and really out there. They've got a weird afro-indie sound that's pretty cool. I suspect that they'll be one of the bigger indie bands to come out this/next year.

Oxford Comma - Vampire Weekend

Some other groups that've been around for a long time that I just came across:

Josh Ritter
Corb Lund and the Hurtin' Albanians
Brandi Carlile
British Sea Power
Cary Brothers
Arcade Fire

Coming Up, the best Albums and Songs of the year.
